English
– State of the Art 1998 - 2009.
BY gLORIA sALAZAR

Mastering of the English language is
vital for Chile in order to meet the many challenges the country
faces in sustaining its development as an emerging economy
in an increasingly globalized world.
The Chilean Ministry of Education (MINEDUC)
as part of the process of educational reform, produced a new
curriculum based on the development of skills and gave more
importance to English starting in the fifth grade. In 2003,
the English Opens Doors Program was created with the objective
of improving English-language teaching and learning among
elementary and high school students who attend public and
subsidized schools.
Since then, many positive changes have
taken place in the educational field and community. This presentation
will try to give a detailed review of these changes and their
impact in our society.
