Title: Critical Teaching in English
Language Education, Lydia Stack
The current world situation in which
we exist is challenging in many ways. There is an explosion
of information accessible through new technologies, there
is the worldwide economic recession, and there are ongoing
conflicts on all continents. In this context there are new
challenges for English language teaching. English language
teaching cannot focus only on form and on language as a unique
subject. English language teaching has to be critical teaching
in which students are educated with tools for real life. Students
need to be presented with authentic tasks with which they
can become engaged. English language teaching involves critical
inquiry in which students ask questions, investigate problems,
and pose answers that may challenge the status quo.
In this presentation we will examine
three areas where English language teachers can teach critically.
The first is teaching language and content together generally
known as Content Based Instruction (CBI) or Content and Language
Integrated Learning (CLIL). These approaches fuse English
language instruction with important content knowledge and
information needed by students today. The second is critical
media literacy. This empowers English learners to examine
information from the web and mass media, to challenge the
sources, and develop a plan of action. The third is peace
education. Students develop real world listening skills and
the language of conflict resolution. As we explore these three
approaches in the presentation, we will examine principles
to use when critically teaching in these critical times.
